PATIALA, PUNJAB: A major fire broke out in four coaches of the Karmabhoomi Express near Sarai Banjara railway station in Punjab's Patiala district on Friday, November 6, triggering panic among passengers. Around 1,500 passengers were travelling on the train, but railway officials reported no casualties or injuries.

The train, numbered 12508, was operating from Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal when the incident occurred on the Rajpura–Sirhind railway section, near Rajpura.

According to railway officials and media reports, the fire was first noticed in a general coach, shortly after the train departed from Sadhugarh railway station. The flames subsequently spread to adjoining coaches, affecting four coaches in total.

Passengers evacuated safely

As smoke and flames spread, passengers rushed out of the affected coaches. Railway authorities, police personnel and fire brigade teams responded to the emergency.

The train was stopped, and safety measures were taken to prevent the fire from spreading further. Railway personnel disconnected the overhead electrical supply and separated the affected coaches from the remaining train.

Officials said three coaches were extensively affected, while a fourth sustained partial damage. No deaths or injuries were reported.

Special trains arranged for passengers

Following the incident, railway authorities made arrangements to help stranded passengers continue their journey.

According to The Tribune, two special trains were arranged from Sarai Banjara station to transport passengers towards New Jalpaiguri. Food, drinking water and other basic assistance were also provided.

The affected railway section was subsequently cleared for train operations after emergency measures were completed.

Cause of fire under investigation

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially established. Some media reports mentioned a possible short circuit, but this has not been confirmed by the railway investigation.

Railway authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine how the fire started and how it spread across multiple coaches.

The incident has once again drawn attention to railway fire safety, emergency response systems and the importance of ensuring that passengers can evacuate quickly during emergencies.

News National Perspective

The safe evacuation of approximately 1,500 passengers is an important outcome of the emergency response. However, the incident raises questions about the circumstances that led to a fire spreading across multiple train coaches.

The investigation will be important in establishing the cause, identifying any safety lapses and determining whether additional preventive measures are required.

The situation: No casualties or injuries were reported, and alternative travel arrangements were made for affected passengers.
