By News National Editorial Team

Saudi student Jana Saleh Abdullah Al-Sabil has achieved an important international academic milestone by winning a gold medal and the Best Female Student award at the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2026, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The award was presented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), recognising her performance in one of the international competitions dedicated to nuclear science and its peaceful applications.

Her achievement formed part of Saudi Arabia's successful performance at the third edition of INSO, where the Kingdom secured first place overall and won four medals: two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Jana Al-Sabil's Outstanding Performance

Jana received the gold medal and the Best Female Student award following her performance in the Olympiad's theoretical and practical examinations.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the special award was approved by the Olympiad's International Council and presented by the IAEA. It recognises outstanding female students in scientific disciplines and encourages greater participation by young women in advanced fields of science.

The competition tested students' understanding of nuclear science, scientific analysis, experimental methods, interpretation of results and problem-solving abilities.

The examinations included two demanding assessments, one theoretical and one practical, each lasting five hours.

Saudi Arabia Wins Four Medals

Jana was among four Saudi students who received medals at INSO 2026.

The other Saudi winners included:

  • Amjad Mahmoud Issa Al-Darwish: Gold medal, first place overall and the title of Nuclear Science Ambassador.

  • Jana Saleh Abdullah Al-Sabil: Gold medal and Best Female Student award.

  • Abdulaziz Abdulmohsen Al-Sharit: Silver medal.

  • Saleh Mubarak Dhaifallah Al-Harbi: Bronze medal.

Amjad Al-Darwish achieved the highest combined score in the theoretical and practical examinations, earning the competition's top position and the Nuclear Science Ambassador title.

Jeddah Hosts 19 Countries

Saudi Arabia hosted the third edition of the International Nuclear Science Olympiad from August 2 to 9, 2026, in Jeddah.

The competition brought together 120 students and scientific specialists representing 19 countries. It was the first time the Olympiad was hosted in the Middle East.

The event was organised through cooperation between the Saudi Ministry of Education, the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), and King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. King Abdulaziz University hosted the competition.

The Olympiad awarded eight gold medals, 13 silver medals and 18 bronze medals, in addition to several special awards.

Encouraging Young Women in Science

Jana's achievement highlights the contribution of young women to scientific research and the importance of creating opportunities for students to participate in international academic competitions.

Nuclear science has peaceful applications in several areas, including medicine, energy, agriculture, industry and scientific research. International competitions such as INSO aim to introduce students to these fields and encourage them to develop the knowledge and skills required for future scientific careers.

The Olympiad was approved by the IAEA in 2024 and is designed primarily for secondary-school students.

Jana Al-Sabil's gold medal and international recognition represent a notable achievement for Saudi student talent and add to the country's growing participation in global science competitions.
