The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, entered the November 2026 Andhra Pradesh urban local body elections with candidates in several municipal corporations and municipalities, seeking to strengthen its political presence beyond Telangana.

The party focused its campaign on selected constituencies, including Kadapa, Vijayawada, Hindupur, Adoni, Rayadurg, Nandyal and Penukonda. Its participation included contests for local ward positions as well as important leadership posts in municipal bodies.

Focus on Kadapa and Hindupur

One of AIMIM's prominent contests was the Kadapa Municipal Corporation mayoral election. The party fielded Shaik Naseem Banu for the mayor's position, according to reports published ahead of polling.

In Hindupur, AIMIM entered the municipal chairperson contest and also fielded candidates in several wards. The party's campaign extended to Adoni, where it contested multiple wards, along with selected divisions in Vijayawada and other municipalities.

The number of candidates reported varied. Some reports stated that 21 candidates remained in the contest after scrutiny, while another report by The Times of India put the final number at 20. The difference highlights the importance of checking the final nomination and contesting-candidate records before publishing a definitive figure.

Asaduddin Owaisi's Party Deploys Senior Leaders

AIMIM strengthened its campaign by bringing senior leaders from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh. Several Hyderabad-based legislators and an MLC participated in election activities and campaigned in areas where the party had fielded candidates.

The leaders included Majid Hussain, Jaffer Hussain Meraj and Mohammed Mubeen, along with MLC Riyaz Ul Hasan Effendi. They were assigned campaign responsibilities in different towns and constituencies.

According to media reports, AIMIM's Andhra Pradesh leadership had initially submitted nominations for a larger number of candidates but later concentrated on selected wards. The strategy was to focus on areas where the party believed it had an established organisational presence rather than contesting widely.

Previous Electoral Presence in Andhra Pradesh

AIMIM's participation in the 2026 municipal elections was not its first attempt to establish a presence in Andhra Pradesh.

The party had contested municipal elections in the state in earlier years. In the 2021 municipal elections, it contested several wards across districts including Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa and Vijayawada. Its earlier electoral record also included ward-level victories in places such as Adoni and Hindupur, as reported by media outlets.

The latest campaign represented another effort to build local-level organisational networks and increase the party's participation in Andhra Pradesh politics.

Election Results and the Road Ahead

Polling for the Andhra Pradesh urban local body elections took place on November 1, 2026, with counting scheduled for November 3. A results tracker updated on November 4 listed one AIMIM ward victory among the declared results. However, the specific winning candidate and constituency require confirmation from official election records.

The party's performance in these local contests may inform its future organisational decisions in Andhra Pradesh. Its participation also adds another political player to the state's municipal-level electoral landscape.

For now, the significance of AIMIM's campaign lies in its effort to contest selected local seats and establish a wider organisational presence. The final assessment should be based on certified election results rather than candidate announcements or campaign claims.
