Saudi Arabia's young scientists have achieved an impressive international milestone, winning 24 awards at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States from May 9 to 15.

The Saudi Science and Engineering Team secured 12 grand awards and 12 special awards, demonstrating the research capabilities of the country's school students across several scientific disciplines.

The achievement included a global first-place award in computational biology and bioinformatics, further highlighting Saudi Arabia's participation in international science and innovation competitions.

Saudi Student Wins Global First Place

Mohammed Nasser Al-Asmari secured first place globally in computational biology and bioinformatics for his research project.

Four Saudi students also received second-place awards in their respective categories:

  • Daleen Badr Qudair – Earth and Environmental Sciences.

  • Moneera Sulaiman Al-Roumi – Environmental Engineering.

  • Imran Omar Al-Turkistani – Environmental Engineering.

  • Jomanah Talal Belal – Materials Science.

Other Saudi students earned third- and fourth-place awards across fields including biomedical and health sciences, chemistry, energy, environmental engineering and materials science.

12 Special Awards Add to the Achievement

In addition to the 12 grand awards, the Saudi delegation received 12 special awards from international scientific and academic organisations.

These awards recognise research projects for their scientific value, innovation and potential applications.

The combination of grand and special awards brought Saudi Arabia's total achievement at the 2026 competition to 24 international awards.

A Team of 40 Students

The Saudi Science and Engineering Team consisted of 40 students. Of these, 23 participated in person at the competition venue in Phoenix, while 17 took part remotely from Riyadh.

The students were selected through a national talent-development and scientific research programme involving the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, and the Saudi Ministry of Education.

The selection process followed a nationwide competition in which more than 357,000 students participated, submitting over 34,000 scientific projects across 22 fields.

The selected students underwent several stages of evaluation, preparation and specialised training before representing their country at ISEF.

Saudi Arabia's Continuing Presence in Global Science

Saudi Arabia has participated in ISEF annually since 2007 through Mawhiba and the Ministry of Education.

According to Mawhiba, the 2026 results increased the Kingdom's cumulative total to 209 awards at the competition, including 136 grand awards and 73 special awards.

The achievement also placed Saudi Arabia second globally in the number of grand awards for the third consecutive year, behind the United States, according to official Saudi announcements.

Investing in the Next Generation of Researchers

The 2026 results highlight the importance of identifying talented students, supporting scientific education and providing opportunities for young researchers to present their work internationally.

For the participating students, the competition offered an opportunity to exchange ideas with young scientists from different countries and present research addressing scientific and technological challenges.

Saudi Arabia's 24 awards at ISEF 2026 represent a significant achievement for its young researchers and its national science and education programmes. The success also demonstrates how sustained investment in student talent can create opportunities for participation in international scientific research and innovation.
