Maharashtra's FDA suspended licences of 10 establishments, including a Swiggy Instamart dark store and Suleman Usman Mithaiwala, over food safety violations.

The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration on Monday suspended the licences of 10 establishments across the state for food safety violations, part of a festive-season crackdown that has netted seizures worth crores of rupees.

Among the businesses ordered shut with immediate effect was Swinsta ENT Private Limited, a Swiggy Instamart dark store at Ballard Estate in south Mumbai. Inspecting officials reported seeing a live rat in the store's handling area and found several 10-kg rice bags gnawed open by rodents, with grain spilling across contaminated flooring.

The FDA said rodent droppings were recorded in key storage zones and a large-scale cockroach infestation was found directly on food articles. Live flies were discovered inside food storage carts. Refrigeration units held dead insects, dirt and heavy ice build-up.

The regulator suspended licences of six other establishments for food safety violations. They include Sadguru Sweets and Farsan Mart in Malad, Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a warehouse operating for Amazon, and Suleman Usman Mithaiwala on Mohammed Ali Road. Jain Sweet & Bhepuri House LLP and Nice Enterprises in Chembur were also on the list.

Rs 1.36 crore in seized food products

The FDA said its festive-season drive has led to the seizure of suspected, adulterated and unhygienic food products worth Rs 1.36 crore from across Maharashtra. The haul covered khoya, mawa, peda, ghee, oil, barfi, dried apricots and raisins, jaggery, sweets and other dairy products.

Separately, officials seized 1,868 kg of turmeric powder valued at Rs 6.53 lakh from Miraj.

The suspensions come as sweet shops and food suppliers see a surge in demand during the festive season, when dairy-based products such as khoya, peda and barfi are consumed in large quantities. The regulator's action targeted both traditional sweet makers and modern quick-commerce and e-commerce supply operations.
