Assamese singer Simanta Shekhar resigned from the BJP and quit as chairperson of the Assam State Film Corporation, citing a personal decision.

Assamese singer and composer Simanta Shekhar on Tuesday stepped down as chairperson of the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation and gave up his place on the Bharatiya Janata Party's state executive committee, along with his primary membership of the party.

Shekhar announced the move by sharing two resignation letters on Facebook. One was addressed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the other to state party president Dilip Saikia. In the note to Sarma, he expressed gratitude for the chance to lead the film corporation and said the chief minister's support and guidance would stay with him as a lasting memory.

Writing to Saikia, the singer thanked the party's senior figures, fellow members and workers for the warmth and backing he had received during his time with the organisation.

Shekhar framed the exit as a private matter. In his Facebook post he said the choice stemmed from a deeply personal reason and had no link to political opinions, party policy or any grievance against an individual. He added that he would not join any political party going forward.

The resignation followed his recent public rebuke of BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta over remarks about the late Assamese icon Zubeen Garg. Garg's first death anniversary was marked on September 19.

Speaking to reporters, Gupta had wrongly claimed that Garg recorded roughly 3,000 songs. The figure drew a wave of criticism, and the legislator later apologised. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Garg had actually sung upwards of 40,000 songs.

In a Facebook message on September 20, Shekhar joined those urging the MLA to study Garg's life and his role in Assamese society and culture before speaking publicly about him. He wrote that belonging to the BJP did not entitle anyone to make uninformed claims about a legend, and that the state's culture, sentiments and reverence for its icons stood above party politics. He called on the MLA to at least show that respect when referring to Garg.

A day before his resignation, on Monday, Shekhar posted that he would no longer stay silent and intended to live the way Garg did. He described the late artist as someone who spoke openly on public matters and never shied away from challenging politicians or party lines.
