A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal will drench West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and more, the IMD warns, with orange and yellow alerts in place.

A deep depression sitting over the Bay of Bengal is set to soak large stretches of India on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department flagging heavy to very heavy rain across Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Jharkhand carries an orange alert for the coming 24 hours. Forecasters expect Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and West Singhbhum to bear the brunt, with heavy to very heavy showers possible. A yellow alert covers 11 additional districts in the state.

In West Bengal, the system is likely to drive intense rain through Saturday morning. Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar have been marked for very heavy downpours.

Odisha faces widespread rain, with pockets of very heavy showers. The IMD extended similar warnings to Bihar, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, where a few places could record extremely heavy rain. Thunder, lightning and gusty winds are forecast alongside the wet spell.

Uttar Pradesh stands out among the affected states. Eastern districts may see very heavy showers on Friday and Saturday, while western parts are also lined up for heavy rain.

East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are each in line for heavy rain, and some areas could tip into very heavy totals accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. East Rajasthan is expected to stay wet up to September 27.

The northeast will not escape. Assam and Meghalaya are set for widespread rain, while the remaining states in the region may catch scattered showers.

Southern India draws milder warnings. Kerala should see widespread rain, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to get scattered showers. Rayalaseema could pick up rain with thunderstorms.

The capital region faces a lighter picture. Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh may get scattered rain starting Friday, a spell that could run until September 29. No heavy rain warning has been issued for Delhi-NCR on Friday.

The IMD said the active rain phase is expected to persist over parts of central, eastern and southern India in the days ahead.
