Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate Pune Metro Line 3 and lay the foundation stone for Phase-II projects on Tuesday, with the combined investment estimated at around ₹21,800 crore, according to a Prime Minister’s Office release. The inauguration and foundation-stone ceremony is scheduled to take place through video conferencing.

Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, has been built at a cost of more than ₹8,300 crore. The approximately 23-kilometre corridor connects Maan with the District Court Metro station and is intended to link the Hinjawadi information technology hub with Shivajinagar. The project is expected to improve access between residential areas, employment centres and the existing metro network.

The government release says the corridor is planned to be operated entirely by women train operators. It also states that around 30 per cent of the line’s electricity requirements are expected to be met through solar power. These are features announced for the project; passenger operations and actual performance will need to be assessed after services begin.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to lay the foundation stone for Pune Metro Phase-II, estimated at around ₹13,500 crore. The expansion includes Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A, which are planned to extend connectivity across residential, commercial and IT districts. The proposed corridors include routes linking Vanaz and Chandani Chowk, Ramwadi and Vitthalwadi, Kharadi and Khadakwasla, and Nal Stop and Manik Baug.

The project is part of Pune’s wider effort to expand public transport and connect metro services with other transport hubs. The PMO says the new corridors are intended to integrate with the existing network and intercity bus services. The extent to which the expansion reduces road congestion will depend on service frequency, passenger uptake and the availability of convenient connections.
