Andhra Pradesh Declares 388 Mandals Drought-Affected After Rainfall Deficit

AMARAVATI — The Andhra Pradesh government has declared 388 mandals across 21 districts as drought-affected for the Kharif 2026 season following a substantial rainfall shortage during the southwest monsoon.

The assessment covers 283 mandals classified as severely affected and another 105 identified under the moderate drought category.

According to reported government data, Andhra Pradesh received about 197.6 mm of rainfall between June 1 and August 31, compared with a normal level of approximately 424.3 mm for the period.

The reported rainfall deficit was about 53.4 percent, with prolonged dry spells contributing to stress on agriculture and water availability.

The drought assessment covers districts extending from northern Andhra Pradesh to the southern parts of the state. YSR Kadapa was reported to have the highest number of affected mandals, with 37.

The early assessment was undertaken before the usual October-end review period because of the severity of the rainfall shortage.

For farmers, inadequate monsoon rainfall can affect sowing, crop growth, irrigation requirements and agricultural incomes. The drought declaration may also influence the implementation of relief and support measures.

Further government decisions on crop-related assistance and drought mitigation are expected to depend on field assessments and available administrative and financial support.
