South Korea’s financial authorities have reported cyberattacks affecting 16 financial firms, with around 100,000 personal-data exposure cases reported as of October 14, 2026. The incidents have prompted renewed concerns about cybersecurity across the country’s financial sector.

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) said investigations were underway to determine how the attacks occurred, what information was affected and whether the incidents were connected. Authorities are also examining whether artificial intelligence played a role in the attacks.

The affected organisations reportedly include businesses across different areas of financial services. Regulators have highlighted cybersecurity weaknesses identified during inspections, including delays in applying software security updates, inadequate monitoring and the continued use of outdated systems.

These weaknesses can leave organisations vulnerable to attackers seeking unauthorised access to sensitive information. However, investigators must establish the specific circumstances of each incident before concluding that the same vulnerabilities or attackers were responsible for all the cases.

The reported exposure of personal information also raises concerns about possible follow-up scams. Criminals can misuse names and contact details to send convincing phishing messages, impersonate financial institutions or attempt identity fraud.

Customers should be cautious about unexpected calls, emails and text messages asking for banking credentials, passwords or one-time verification codes. Anyone concerned about a possible breach should contact their financial institution through its official website or customer-service number.

South Korean authorities are continuing their investigation and reviewing measures to strengthen financial-sector security. Further findings are expected to clarify the scale of the incidents, the methods used and whether additional organisations or customers were affected.
