A new Michelob Ultra campaign, posted to Messi's own Instagram account, packages his 21-year Argentina career as a mock bar receipt. The advert lists his goals, assists and minutes played alongside his biggest honours before closing with the line: "GOAT debate-settled." Morgan, a vocal Ronaldo backer, was quick to reject the sentiment.

The brand's clip treats Messi's achievements as items totted up on a restaurant tab. Rather than a plain roll-call of trophies, it runs through the milestones that shaped his years in the blue and white, tallying his output on the pitch. It also spotlights his major international wins, among them the 2022 FIFA World Cup, several Copa América titles, Olympic gold and the Finalissima, and even acknowledges the many millions of supporters he has drawn to the game.

One detail matters: the final verdict belonged to the advertising campaign, not to Messi declaring himself the finest footballer in history. That nuance did nothing to soften Morgan's reaction. The journalist branded the promotion "the most arrogant piece of shameless bragging in the history of sport" and labelled it "Hilarious" in a social media post. Given how openly he has sided with Ronaldo over the years, the outburst surprised no one.

A retirement that reopened the debate

Morgan's swipe landed only days after Messi confirmed the end of his Argentina journey. The 39-year-old closes a two-decade spell with the national side having made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals, figures that leave him as his country's most-capped player and its all-time top scorer.
