'Hanuman Ansh' Hits Rs 61 Crore After OTT Rejection

Director Vishal Chaturvedi says an OTT platform used 'derogatory' language to reject 'Hanuman Ansh,' now a Rs 61 crore box office surprise.

The spiritual drama "Hanuman Ansh" has become an unexpected box office success, collecting Rs 61 crore net in India across 27 days since its theatrical release. The film, centred on the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, was written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, who has now spoken about a difficult rejection he faced before the project ever reached cinemas.

Speaking to India TV, Chaturvedi said he had approached an OTT platform to pitch the film and grew deeply emotional while presenting it. He recalled being told that his story carried international appeal, and said he became so absorbed in narrating the tale of Neem Karoli Baba, revered as Maharaj Ji, that he wept during the meeting.

What stayed with the director was not the refusal itself but the way it was communicated. Chaturvedi described the language used to turn him away as "derogatory," and said the encounter strengthened his resolve to press ahead. He suggested the response revealed a flawed way of thinking that he felt compelled to challenge through the film.

"Mujhe laga jis tarah unhone reject kiya, jis bhaasha ka prayog kiya, woh thodi derogatory thi," he said, adding that the manner of the rejection exposed a gap in the platform's understanding of the story, one he believed needed to be corrected.

The director was careful to separate the fact of rejection from the way it was handled. He said turning down pitches is an ordinary part of a filmmaker's working life, and that he had experienced it countless times. In his view, being passed over is not the problem; the problem is how the decision is conveyed.

"We are filmmakers, we have been rejected a thousand times," he said, describing how a story is sometimes praised on the surface while being quietly shelved with vague promises to take it up at a later date.

From Rs 10 lakh to Rs 61 crore

The film's commercial rise was anything but immediate. Released on August 7, "Hanuman Ansh" earned just Rs 10 lakh on its opening day. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, it closed its first week with a modest Rs 1.08 crore.

Momentum built slowly. The second week added only around Rs 40 lakh to the total. The turning point came in the third week, when collections surged to Rs 10.40 crore, setting the film on course for the Rs 61 crore figure it has now reached.

The cast and story

The drama traces the life and spiritual teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. Shobhinaw Satyaa plays the saint, while Vihaan Shedge portrays Maharaj Ji at a different point in the narrative. The supporting cast includes Chandan Anand, Purnima Tiwari, Anil K Rastogi and Gulshan Pandey.

The film runs for two hours and 30 minutes and carries a U certificate, marking it suitable for general audiences.
