New Hyundai Creta Drops Heavy Camo, Reveals Sharper Look

The next-generation Hyundai Creta, codenamed SX3, has been spotted testing in Spain with new styling, a hybrid engine and a software-defined platform.

Hyundai's next-generation Creta has been caught testing in southern Spain, and for the first time the car has appeared without the bulky panels that hid its shape in earlier sightings. The prototype, built under the internal codename SX3, now wears only a lighter camouflage wrap, giving the clearest look yet at how the redesigned midsize SUV will look when it reaches showrooms.

Engineers appear to be putting the vehicle through hot-weather trials, a common step for models bound for warm markets such as India. A towing rig fitted at the rear of the test car points to a separate round of work: measuring how much the SUV can pull and how it holds up when driven under sustained load.

The styling marks a clear break from the current model. Hyundai has applied its newer "Art of Steel" design theme, which brings crisper, more angular surfaces. The mule shows an upright front end and a squared-off body. H-shaped LED daytime running lights sit high on the nose, and Hyundai is expected to pair them with LED projector headlamps on either side of a redesigned grille. A deep front bumper with slatted detailing rounds out the face.

Along the sides, the car carries a gently sloping roofline, door handles that sit flush with the bodywork, rounded wheel arches and two-tone machined alloy wheels. The tail features a roof-mounted spoiler, a steeply angled rear glass, a flat tailgate and a substantial bumper. The rear lights are expected to echo the H motif seen at the front.

A move to software-defined tech

Inside, the biggest shift is under the surface. The new Creta is set to become a software-defined vehicle, meaning core functions can be revised after the car leaves the factory. Owners would receive fresh features and refinements through over-the-air downloads, with no need to swap out hardware.

Hyundai is also expected to fit its Pleos Connect setup. The system centres on a main display that merges infotainment and instrument functions and splits its layout into three sections to help drivers find what they need. A second, narrower screen sits on the dash behind the steering wheel and concentrates on driving essentials such as speed and turn-by-turn directions.

Hybrid power and market-specific engines

A full hybrid drivetrain is one of the headline mechanical changes. In markets that also receive the new Kona, the setup will match the one offered in the latest global-specification Seltos. That system is built around a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated GDI petrol engine, paired with either one or two electric motors and backed by a compact high-voltage battery.

The electric layout drives the output figures. Versions with two motors gain eAWD, sending power to all four wheels. Two-wheel-drive variants produce 154 PS, while the eAWD version delivers a combined 178 PS. Buyers can also expect vehicle-to-load capability, which lets the car power external devices, along with regenerative braking and voice commands driven by artificial intelligence.

India will get a different hybrid configuration. There, the strong hybrid will be based on a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Hyundai plans to keep the current engine choices on the menu alongside the new hybrid option, giving buyers a range of powertrains rather than a single path.

The timing remains open. Hyundai is expected to launch the new Creta either late this year or in 2027. Until then, the SUV continues its test programme across different climates and load conditions as the company works to keep the model at the front of a crowded segment.
