Rupee Weakens Against US Dollar as Rising Oil Prices Pressure Indian Markets

MUMBAI, October 28, 2026: The Indian rupee weakened slightly against the US dollar on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and uncertainty in international financial markets increased pressure on the domestic currency.

According to Reuters, the rupee traded at approximately ₹95.19 per US dollar, compared with the previous close of ₹95.1150.

The movement came as Brent crude oil prices rose by more than 1% to around $115.50 per barrel following an attack on a Saudi Arabian refinery, renewing concerns about global oil supplies.

Why higher oil prices matter to India

India imports a substantial proportion of its crude oil requirements. Higher international oil prices can increase the cost of imports and raise the amount of foreign currency required by Indian companies to pay overseas suppliers.

A sustained increase in crude prices can also place pressure on domestic fuel costs, transport expenses and businesses that rely heavily on energy.

Higher import bills may contribute to demand for US dollars, putting additional pressure on the rupee. The final impact on inflation, however, depends on several factors, including domestic fuel pricing, government policies and movements in other commodities.

RBI intervention and foreign investment flows

Reuters reported that modest foreign portfolio investment inflows and probable intervention by the Reserve Bank of India helped limit the rupee's decline.

Market participants also reported dollar sales by state-run banks, which were believed to have been acting on behalf of the central bank.

Such transactions can help manage excessive volatility in the foreign exchange market. They do not necessarily indicate that a currency's broader trend has reversed.

The rupee's performance also reflected wider weakness across Asian currencies ahead of a US Federal Reserve policy decision.

Equity markets under pressure

The Nifty 50 declined by approximately 0.7% during Wednesday's trading, according to the Reuters report. The movement came as investors monitored developments in the Middle East, oil supply concerns and expectations surrounding US monetary policy.

Changes in global interest rates can influence capital flows between emerging markets and developed economies. When investors expect US interest rates to remain relatively high, dollar-denominated assets may become more attractive, although actual market movements depend on a range of economic and geopolitical factors.

What it means for consumers and businesses

A weaker rupee can increase the cost of imported goods, including crude oil, electronics and some industrial inputs. Exporters may benefit from receiving foreign-currency earnings that translate into more rupees, although their input costs and currency exposure also matter.

For consumers, the effects are not always immediate. Fuel prices, inflation and the cost of imported products depend on how long exchange-rate and commodity-price changes persist and how businesses pass those costs on.

Investors should avoid drawing conclusions from a single day's currency movement. Global oil prices, central-bank decisions, foreign investment flows and domestic economic data will remain important indicators to monitor.
