Hyderabad Explores Driverless Pod Taxis to Connect Metro Stations With Workplaces

Hyderabad, Telangana | October 11, 2026

The Telangana government is exploring a driverless pod-taxi network intended to connect Hyderabad Metro stations with major employment centres and other destinations. The proposed Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system could provide another option for commuters travelling between public transport stations, technology parks and business districts.

A report published by Hindustan Times Telugu on October 11 said officials had presented technical and financial feasibility details of the proposal to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The project remains at the planning and assessment stage; it should not be treated as an operational transport service.

Four proposed corridors

The reported plan identifies four corridors:

  • Kukatpally–Raidurg zone: approximately 7.62 kilometres.

  • Raidurg–Knowledge City zone: approximately 12.83 kilometres.

  • HITEC City/Raidurg–Financial District zone: approximately 14.01 kilometres.

  • Secretariat–NTR Marg corridor: approximately 6.36 kilometres.

The report outlines a phased development concept, with network expansion targets extending to 2030, 2040 and 2050. These are planning projections, not guaranteed completion dates. Final routes, budgets, approvals, funding arrangements and construction schedules would need to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.

How pod taxis could work

Personal Rapid Transit systems generally use small automated vehicles operating on dedicated guideways. Depending on the design, passengers may travel in small groups between selected stations without sharing a vehicle with a large number of other commuters.

If implemented effectively, such a system could improve connections between Metro stations and destinations that are not within convenient walking distance. It could also reduce the need for some short car or taxi journeys. Those benefits, however, would depend on affordability, passenger capacity, reliable operations and convenient integration with existing public transport.

Questions that remain

Before construction can begin, the project will require detailed assessments of engineering feasibility, costs, passenger demand, land requirements, safety and long-term maintenance. Authorities will also need to clarify how passengers would transfer between pod taxis, Metro services, buses and other transport options.

For commuters, the central question is whether the proposed system can deliver a practical, affordable and dependable connection to workplaces. Further official announcements will be needed before the project’s final design and implementation schedule can be established.
