Ganga erosion in Bihar's Bhagalpur district damaged an embankment, affected dozens of homes and destroyed a temple, prompting emergency protective work.

Bhagalpur, Bihar, October 11, 2026

Severe riverbank erosion along the Ganga in Bihar's Bhagalpur district has damaged an embankment, affected dozens of houses and destroyed a temple, according to reports citing local officials. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of riverside settlements and the risk of further damage along the vulnerable stretch.

The erosion began on Friday evening near Mahadevpur Ghat in Raghopur village, close to an abandoned railway line on the river's left bank. Reports said around 40 to 50 houses were affected, including five that were destroyed. Several other homes developed cracks, prompting precautionary evacuations.

A section of the embankment measuring approximately 50 metres was reportedly damaged. The incident highlights the risks faced by communities living close to riverbanks where strong currents can remove soil and undermine buildings.

Emergency response and protective measures

The Bihar Water Resources Department deployed engineering teams to assess the affected area and carry out protective work. Officials arranged sand-filled bags, geobags, nylon crates, vehicles and boats to support efforts to strengthen vulnerable sections.

Although the river's water level was reported to be below the warning mark and had fallen during the preceding hours, officials remained concerned about the strong current directed towards the affected bank. A falling water level does not automatically eliminate erosion risks, particularly where the river is flowing forcefully against an unstable bank.

Local authorities may need to assess damaged houses, identify families requiring temporary shelter and determine whether additional sections of the bank need urgent protection.

Impact on residents

For families whose houses have been destroyed or weakened, the immediate concerns include safe accommodation, access to drinking water, food, sanitation and protection of belongings. Residents should avoid returning to visibly cracked or unstable structures until officials confirm that it is safe.

Riverbank erosion can also damage roads, agricultural land, religious sites and other community infrastructure. The longer-term response may require mapping vulnerable locations, monitoring changes in the river channel and developing relocation or protection plans where repeated erosion threatens homes.

Officials will need to provide updated information on the number of affected families, compensation arrangements and the progress of protective work.

The situation remains subject to change as engineering teams continue their assessment. Further reports should distinguish between confirmed structural damage and areas that authorities have identified as being at risk.
