The Supreme Court has directed the Andhra Pradesh High Court to monitor the investigation into the death of a seven-year-old girl in Polavaram following an anti-malaria campaign.

The case concerns the administration of chloroquine during a public-health campaign. Other villagers reportedly experienced similar symptoms, while the child's death is being investigated.

What happened?

According to reports, the child, Madivi Jamuna, from Gollaguppa village in Polavaram, died on September 2 after being taken to hospital.

Reports said several other villagers, including children, were also hospitalised after receiving the medication.

Why the court intervened

The Supreme Court has called for monitoring by the Andhra Pradesh High Court to ensure that the investigation is conducted properly.

Authorities are awaiting laboratory findings, including forensic examination, which could help establish what happened to the medicine involved.

No conclusion before investigation

The investigation is still ongoing.

It would be premature to conclude that the medicine itself caused the death or that negligence occurred until medical and forensic evidence is examined.

Public-health lessons

The incident highlights the importance of:

  • Correct medicine identification

  • Proper dosage

  • Medical supervision

  • Safe storage and distribution

  • Monitoring patients after treatment

  • Prompt investigation of adverse reactions
