Protests Across France, India, Spain and Chile as October 2026 Demonstrations Intensify

October 7, 2026: Demonstrations have intensified in several countries in recent days, with major protests reported in France, India, Spain and Chile. Although the demonstrations are taking place during the same period, they are not part of a single coordinated global movement. Each protest has its own domestic cause, ranging from education and housing to electoral-roll revisions.

France: Students Protest School Conditions

France has witnessed a major student-led protest movement over conditions in the country's high schools.

The demonstrations began in September and expanded nationally, with students, teachers, parents and trade unions joining calls for better educational resources. Protesters have highlighted teacher and staff shortages, overcrowded classrooms, long school hours and deteriorating school buildings.

On October 6, more than 250,000 people participated in demonstrations across France, according to reports. Attendance figures can vary depending on whether they come from authorities or organisers.

The demonstrations have also produced clashes in some locations. French authorities have reported thousands of arrests since the movement began, while officials have said schools and staff have suffered damage and injuries.

The French government has faced increasing pressure to respond to demands for improved school facilities and staffing.

India: Opposition Protests Over SIR and Election Commission

In India, opposition parties have been demonstrating against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On October 6, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc lawmakers marched in New Delhi toward the Election Commission. Police stopped the demonstration and detained several opposition lawmakers.

The opposition has alleged that the voter-roll revision could exclude eligible voters and has questioned the Election Commission's handling of the process.

Those claims remain political allegations rather than independently established findings. The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected the opposition's accusations.

Protests continued on October 7, when Rahul Gandhi and other lawmakers were again detained during demonstrations demanding action over the issue.

Spain: Housing Crisis Sparks Large Demonstration

Spain has also seen major demonstrations over the country's housing affordability crisis.

In Barcelona on October 5, thousands marched demanding lower rents, greater access to affordable housing and stronger protections for people facing housing insecurity.

The size of the demonstration is disputed. Barcelona's municipal authorities estimated approximately 20,000 participants, while organisers claimed the turnout was as high as 120,000.

The main demonstration was reportedly peaceful. However, serious disturbances broke out after the march ended. Police reported 13 arrests and 30 lightly injured Mossos d'Esquadra officers. Authorities also reported barricades and fires during the subsequent unrest.

The protests reflect wider concerns in Spain about rising rents, housing shortages and access to affordable homes.

Chile: Students Protest Education Budget

In Chile, students and supporting organisations demonstrated in Santiago on October 1 against proposed changes to the 2027 education budget.

The protest was organised by the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confech), with the slogan “Ni un peso menos para la educación” — “Not a single peso less for education.”

Attendance estimates differed. El País reported that more than 20,000 people participated, while police figures cited by other reporting put the number at approximately 6,000. Police reported dozens of arrests, with later figures reaching 31 detainees.

The demonstrations followed President José Antonio Kast's announcement of the proposed 2027 budget. The government says education remains a major spending area, while student and education groups argue that the proposed allocation does not adequately address their concerns.

Four Countries, Four Different Causes

The simultaneous protests in France, India, Spain and Chile highlight different domestic political and social pressures:

  • France: school funding, staffing and educational conditions

  • India: SIR electoral-roll revision and demands concerning the Election Commission

  • Spain: housing affordability, rents and housing rights

  • Chile: education funding and the proposed 2027 budget

While social media posts may group these demonstrations together as part of a broader wave of protests, there is no evidence from the sources reviewed that the four movements are centrally coordinated.

For readers following developments, attendance figures should also be treated carefully because protest organisers and government authorities frequently publish different estimates.
