Mauritius Protests Escalate After Police Shooting as Authorities Lift Overnight Curfew

By News National Editorial Team

PORT LOUIS, Mauritius, October 14, 2026: Mauritius is facing a period of serious public unrest after demonstrations over water shortages and the rising cost of living intensified following a police shooting that wounded a 27-year-old woman. The government imposed an overnight curfew to restore order, but authorities lifted the restrictions on Wednesday morning and said the situation had come under control.

The unrest has disrupted daily life on the Indian Ocean island, where large-scale civil disturbances are relatively uncommon. Protesters blocked roads, burned tyres and clashed with police, while public property was damaged in several locations. Schools and some public services were also disrupted during the unrest. Reuters and the Associated Press reported on the developments.

Water shortages and rising living costs fuel anger

Public frustration had been building over difficulties accessing water and the increasing cost of everyday essentials. These concerns prompted demonstrations in several areas, reflecting wider dissatisfaction with living conditions and the government's response.

Water shortages are particularly difficult for households that depend on reliable supplies for drinking, cooking, cleaning and other daily needs. Combined with pressure on household budgets, the shortages contributed to public anger before the situation escalated following the shooting.

The protests highlight how shortages of essential services can quickly become a wider political and public-order challenge when residents feel that their concerns are not being addressed.

Police shooting intensifies the protests

The situation became more volatile after police shot and wounded Élodie Thomas, 27, while she was travelling home from work in a van in a residential area south of the capital.

According to Reuters, the woman underwent surgery to remove the bullet. Local media reported that a police sergeant had been provisionally charged in connection with the shooting. Authorities said an investigation was underway, although the circumstances that led to the shooting had not been fully established in the reports available at the time.

The incident intensified public anger and was followed by road blockades, burning tyres and confrontations with police. The authorities deployed additional security personnel as the unrest spread.

Government imposes and then lifts curfew

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced an overnight curfew covering Port Louis and several other population centres. The restriction ran from 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, local time.

The measure was intended to contain the unrest and prevent further damage. Schools were temporarily closed in affected areas, and residents were advised to follow official instructions.

By Wednesday morning, the curfew had ended. Police said the situation was under control, while the authorities continued monitoring public safety. The government's response and the investigation into the shooting remain important issues as officials assess the unrest.

The immediate priorities are restoring reliable access to water, addressing concerns about living costs, maintaining public safety and establishing the facts surrounding the police shooting.

The incident has also raised questions about police accountability and how authorities respond when public demonstrations escalate. Any conclusions about responsibility for the shooting should await the findings of the investigation.

The coming days will be important in determining whether tensions ease or further demonstrations occur. The government's response to the underlying public-service concerns may influence whether confidence can be restored.

News National will continue to monitor developments and update this report as verified information becomes available.
