In 2011, Galliano was dismissed from his role as creative director at Dior following his conviction for abusing a Jewish curator inside a Paris restaurant. The court proceedings revealed he had also directed racist slurs at the woman's companion and expressed admiration for Hitler. He blamed the incidents on professional pressure and substance abuse at the time.

In his Monday announcement, Galliano stated he remains "fully accountable" for harm caused by his previous words, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities. Vogue Editor Backs Galliano's Cancellation Decision

Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue and a Met trustee, stated that Galliano's choice to withdraw the exhibition "is very courageous" and reflects his character. City Council Speaker Called Exhibition a 'Gut Punch'

Julie Menin, speaker of New York City Council, had opposed the exhibition from the start, saying it would constitute a "gut punch" to the Jewish community during a period of rising antisemitism. Anti-Defamation League Called Honour 'Misguided'
