Tokyo, Japan

A strong earthquake struck central Japan on November 8, 2026, damaging commercial properties, shattering shop windows and injuring at least 22 people, according to reports citing local authorities and media.

The earthquake affected areas around Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures, prompting residents to leave buildings as emergency services assessed the damage.

Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.7, while the United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 5.5.

Buildings and businesses affected

The tremor caused visible damage in several locations, including shattered windows at commercial establishments.

Images from affected areas showed broken glass outside shops and books scattered across the floors of a bookstore.

Some injuries reportedly occurred when people fell while attempting to leave buildings during the shaking.

The affected region includes parts of central Japan, with reports of the earthquake being felt across a wider area, including Kyoto, Nara and Gifu.

Authorities issue warnings about possible aftershocks

Japan's Meteorological Agency advised residents to remain alert for further strong earthquakes during the coming week, particularly over the next two to three days.

Officials also warned people to watch for secondary hazards, including landslides and falling rocks, especially in areas affected by rainfall.

Although aftershocks are common following significant seismic activity, authorities have not said that another major earthquake is certain.

The agency also reported that it had detected no apparent changes in the Nankai Trough plate associated with the earthquake.

Bullet train services operate at reduced speeds

Railway operations were affected as a precaution.

Shinkansen bullet trains operating through affected areas were reported to be travelling at reduced speeds while railway operators checked infrastructure and monitored safety conditions.

Such precautionary measures are important because earthquake damage to railway tracks and supporting structures may not always be immediately visible.

Japan's earthquake preparedness remains critical

Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic activity.

The country has developed extensive earthquake-monitoring systems, building regulations and public emergency procedures.

Residents are regularly advised to maintain emergency supplies, including drinking water, food, batteries and essential medicines.

People are also encouraged to identify safe places inside buildings and understand evacuation procedures.

What residents should watch for

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and assess damage.

Residents in affected areas should follow official emergency instructions, avoid damaged structures and remain alert to possible aftershocks.

The latest earthquake again demonstrates why earthquake preparedness and resilient infrastructure remain essential for communities across Japan.
