Iran Referred to UN Security Council Over Nuclear Non-Compliance

Iran has been referred to the UN Security Council over nuclear non-compliance. Tehran condemned the resolution and blamed US and Israeli strikes.

Iran has been referred to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear non-compliance, following a resolution that Tehran has sharply condemned.

The referral moves the dispute over Iran's nuclear activities to the Security Council, the UN's highest body for matters of international peace and security. Tehran rejected the resolution behind the move and pushed back against the finding of non-compliance.

In its response, Iran laid the blame on military action against its nuclear sites. Tehran said strikes carried out by the United States and Israel had hit its nuclear facilities and disrupted the inspection process, arguing that the damage to those sites was responsible for the breakdown in oversight.

By framing the strikes as the cause of the disruption, Iran cast itself as the aggrieved party rather than the party at fault. The government condemned the resolution outright, signaling it does not accept the basis on which it has been referred.

The referral marks an escalation in the standoff over Iran's nuclear program, shifting it from a technical compliance question into the Security Council arena. Iran's condemnation makes clear it intends to contest the case rather than concede the non-compliance finding.
