India registered 30,696 electric cars in August 2026, up 51.89% YoY. Tata led with 13,158 units as Tata and Mahindra took nearly 64% of the market.

India registered 30,696 electric cars in August 2026, a 51.89% jump over the 20,210 units recorded in August 2025. The month added 10,486 EVs compared with a year earlier, and two companies - Tata Motors and Mahindra - accounted for nearly 64% of all electric car registrations.

Tata Motors held a commanding lead with 13,158 units, up 63.17% from 8,064 units a year ago. The company took 42.87% of the market, meaning more than four in every ten electric cars registered during August came from Tata. Mahindra ranked second with 6,464 units, a 56.17% rise from 4,139 units in August 2025, giving it a 21.06% share.

Despite the strong annual growth, EV sales slipped month on month. July 2026 registrations stood at 32,928 units, so August marked a 6.78% sequential decline. Tata itself fell 3.80% from 13,678 units in July, while Mahindra dropped 16.51% from 7,742 units.

Electric vehicles made up 7.63% of the overall car market in August, easing from 7.90% in July. Even so, EV penetration stayed well ahead of the 5.83% share recorded in August 2025 - an improvement of 1.80 percentage points year on year.

MG Slips, VinFast Climbs to Fourth

JSW MG Motor took third place with 4,622 registrations, but unlike Tata and Mahindra it posted an annual decline. Sales fell 17.77% from 5,621 units a year earlier and dropped 18.76% from 5,689 units in July. MG's market share stood at 15.06%.

VinFast was among the month's standout performers. The company registered 2,199 units and moved into fourth position, a 48.38% increase over July. The growth followed VinFast's denial earlier in the month of reports that it had paused its India expansion, with the automaker restating its commitment to the market.

Maruti followed with 1,412 EV registrations for a 4.60% share, down 11.75% from 1,600 units in July.

Hyundai and Kia Post Sharp Monthly Gains

Hyundai registered 803 electric cars, up 17.06% year on year and 41.87% month on month, for a 2.62% market share. The company is set to enter the compact EV SUV segment later this year with a made-in-India electric SUV, a move expected to lift its EV volumes.

Kia sold 645 units, up 28.74% year on year and 37.23% month on month, helped by the launch of its new Syros EV. BYD registered 543 units, down 6.54% year on year and 27.50% month on month.

Among the premium and remaining brands, BMW recorded 274 units, Toyota 161, Tesla 116 and Mercedes-Benz 114. Citroen registered 44 electric cars and Volvo 33.

Cleaner Fuels Edge Past Petrol

The wider fuel mix showed a clear shift away from conventional petrol. In August 2026, petrol and ethanol vehicles made up 40.85% of car retail sales, CNG and LPG reached 25.28%, diesel stood at 17.21%, hybrids at 9.04% and EVs at 7.63%.

Taken together, CNG and LPG, hybrids and EVs accounted for 41.95% of car retail - marginally ahead of the 40.85% held by petrol and ethanol. Within that changing mix, electric cars kept gaining ground, with August registrations growing close to 52% over the same month last year.
