HBO Max Turns Ryan Reynolds' Lanterns 'Cameo' Wish Into a Clip

After Ryan Reynolds said he'd 'totally' do a cameo in HBO's Lanterns, HBO Max answered with an altered clip of his Hal Jordan flying over the show.

Ryan Reynolds said in a recent interview that he would "totally" be open to a cameo in the DC Universe series *Lanterns*. HBO Max answered him, though not in the way most fans would expect.

On Friday, September 4, 2026, the streamer's official account on X, formerly Twitter, posted an altered clip that dropped Reynolds' version of Hal Jordan into a scene from the show. Reynolds played Hal in the 2011 film *Green Lantern*. In the new series, Kyle Chandler plays the character.

The clip opens with Reynolds' interview on Entertainment Tonight, where he floated the idea of appearing in the show. It then cuts to a modified moment from *Lanterns*. Chandler's Hal and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart look up at the sky, and Hal asks, "What the f- is that?"

In the real scene, which appears in Episode 2, the two are looking at a bird that John built using his Green Lantern ring. In the doctored version, Reynolds' Hal is the thing in the sky. He flies around and performs backflips in a fully VFX-created costume. The caption reads, "Spotted."

Reynolds, who is highly active on social media, had not responded to the post. His openness to a cameo surprised many observers, because the actor has spent years acknowledging the shortcomings of his *Green Lantern* film.

That 2011 movie landed as both a critical and commercial disappointment. Reynolds has since folded jokes about it into his public persona and has repeatedly owned the film's failure rather than defend it.

The production did leave one lasting mark on his life. Reynolds met Blake Lively, who played Carol Ferris, on the set. The pair married in 2012.

The reception for *Lanterns* stands in sharp contrast to that earlier effort. The series holds a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also been sitting at the top spot on HBO Max's TV charts, according to viewership tracker FlixPatrol.

The altered clip stops short of an actual crossover. HBO Max granted Reynolds' wish only in edited form, using visual effects rather than a real appearance by the actor. For now, Chandler remains the face of Hal Jordan in the series, with Pierre alongside him as John Stewart.

Whether Reynolds replies, or whether the exchange leads to anything beyond a social media joke, remains to be seen. The star has not addressed the post, and neither he nor the streamer has indicated that a genuine cameo is in the works.
