Derek Jeter's Empty Tampa Mansion Baffles Neighbours

Derek Jeter's 22,000-square-foot Tampa estate, once leased by Tom Brady, sits empty under a crypto trust after demolition plans stalled.

A 22,000-square-foot waterfront estate at 58 Bahama Circle on Tampa's Davis Islands sits empty and untouched, five years after Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen moved out. The property, built by former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, is now held by a cryptocurrency trust, and no one lives there. Demolition crews were supposed to level it in 2022. The mansion is still standing.

The estate ranks among the most expensive homes in the Tampa Bay area, yet its owner is not publicly known and its purpose is unclear. Records show the title belongs to an entity called Zebb.com Trust, but the name of the person behind that trust has never surfaced in public documents.

Jeter's company assembled the site from three neighbouring waterfront lots, bought in 2005 and 2006 for roughly $7.7 million, according to Mansion Global. The land carried a high price for empty parcels, but it offered 345 feet of bay frontage on a man-made island a short drive from downtown Tampa. Jeter chose to build a custom home on the combined parcel.

The project ran four years. When it was finished in 2012, the residence was the largest on Davis Islands. It held seven bedrooms, a wine cellar, a home cinema, a six-car garage, a gym, an 80-foot pool, and a dock fitted with boat lifts. A six-foot brick wall enclosed the grounds. Irritated neighbours took to calling it the Great Wall of Jeter.

Jeter left Tampa for Miami in 2017, and the house stood largely unused. Its next chapter began in April 2020, when Brady joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and needed somewhere to live quickly. He reached out to Jeter, and the two worked out a lease that allowed Jeter to keep the home listed for sale while Brady, Bündchen and their family lived in it. Brady once joked that Jeter was his landlord. During his stay, Brady won a Super Bowl, and the address drew wide attention.

From a $22.5 million sale to a stalled teardown

Jeter put the property on the market for $29 million at the end of 2020. Many prospective buyers considered the figure too high, and it lingered through 2021. An offer finally arrived in May, and the home changed hands for $22.5 million - the most ever paid for a home in Tampa. The buyer's identity stayed hidden. Instead of a name, public records listed Zebb.com Trust as the owner.

The new owner had ambitious intentions. A construction firm filed a demolition permit, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The idea was to raze Jeter's house and replace it with a still larger one - a 30,000-square-foot home for a local family. Plans called for six bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and 11 half-bathrooms, plus a gym, a swimming pool and a wide stretch of open ground. The build was expected to run several years, with work due to begin in 2024.

That schedule never held. The demolition permit lapsed in 2023, and nothing replaced it. The mansion still stands, caught between what it was and what it was meant to become.

Three years without a permit

Ellison Construction has not filed a renewed permit in the three years since the original one expired. Hillsborough County records show no activity on the site apart from ordinary tax filings, the newspaper reported.

One detail hints at how the property is being used. In 2023, local entrepreneur Sidd Pagidipati and his wife listed the address as their primary residence. That designation qualified the trust for a homestead tax exemption. The couple have not said what they intend to do with the house.

For now, the estate stays sealed and idle. One of Florida's costliest homes has no clear owner in the public eye, no active plans and no one prepared to say whether it will be preserved or torn down.
