2026 Mahindra Thar Facelift Spied in Final Road Tests

The Mahindra Thar 3-Door facelift has been spotted testing with a Thar Roxx-inspired grille, LED headlights and new wheels ahead of its launch.

Mahindra's Thar 3-Door is close to a significant update. The lifestyle off-road SUV has been spotted testing on public roads in what appears to be its final rounds before launch, with recent spy images credited to Sudeepto Roy Suvro. The test mules look production-ready, and the launch is expected soon.

The Thar was last updated in 2025 with a modest feature bump. This next round is a full facelift, and the biggest change is up front. The revised fascia pulls the 3-Door much closer to the Thar Roxx, the five-door version of the SUV, borrowing design cues that should give the smaller Thar a more premium look for its target buyers.

A front end borrowed from the Roxx

The test cars show a new grille that appears to be inspired by, or shared directly with, the Thar Roxx. The headlights are circular projector LED units paired with C-shaped LED daytime running lights, again matching the Roxx. The bumper may also carry over from the larger model, complete with LED fog lights that include a cornering function.

Much less has changed at the rear. The basic look is carried over, including the tailgate-mounted spare wheel and the split tailgate. The LED tail lights and rear bumper may get only a slight refresh. The side profile also stays the same as the current model, since the main styling work is concentrated at the front.

One visible difference lower down is the wheels. The facelift appears to run new wheel designs, and earlier spy shots pointed to a changed look. They could still be 18-inch units, as on the current Thar, but with a fresh pattern.

New tech and driver aids

The update is expected to add equipment aimed at everyday usability and safety. Spy watchers anticipate a 360-degree camera setup, rear disc brakes, and possibly front and side parking sensors. These features would address common gaps in a vehicle built primarily for rough-road use.

Inside, the facelift is expected to move upmarket with more features than before. The list points to a TFT instrument cluster, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror, and ventilated front seats finished in perforated leatherette. Level-2 ADAS is also expected, at least as an option on the higher-spec LX trim, for added safety. Buyers may also hope for touches seen in the Roxx, such as Harman Kardon speakers and soft-touch plastics, though these are not confirmed.

Same engine line-up

Under the bonnet, the facelift is expected to keep the current trio of engines. That means a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol, and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel.

The drivetrain choices are set to follow the existing pattern. The 1.5-litre diesel is expected to come only with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The larger 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel will offer an automatic gearbox option along with four-wheel-drive capability.

With the test mules now looking close to production specification and appearing in what look like final trials, the 2026 Thar facelift is shaping up as a styling and feature-led update rather than a mechanical overhaul. Mahindra has not confirmed a launch date, but the SUV's road testing suggests it is not far off.
