A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Tibet, killing at least 16 people and damaging hundreds of homes as rescue operations continued.

Dateline: Nagqu, Tibet, China

A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.0 struck the Tibet region of China, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens, according to reports published on Friday. Rescue operations continued as authorities assessed damage and worked to assist affected communities.

The earthquake struck at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 22. The United States Geological Survey placed the epicentre about 119 miles east-northeast of Nagqu, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area.

Local authorities reported that at least 339 homes and 20 livestock shelters had collapsed. Reports said 54 people were injured, including 11 whose injuries were considered serious. These figures may change as rescue teams reach more locations and assess the damage.

Emergency personnel and local officials were deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Authorities also arranged temporary accommodation, tents, bedding and winter clothing for people whose homes were damaged.

The region's high elevation, cold conditions and difficult terrain could complicate rescue and relief efforts. The immediate priorities include locating survivors, providing medical treatment, inspecting damaged buildings and ensuring that displaced families have shelter.

Earthquakes can cause additional dangers after the initial shaking, including aftershocks, landslides and further structural collapses. Residents should follow local emergency instructions and avoid entering damaged buildings until authorities declare them safe.

What readers should know: The reported death toll and damage figures are preliminary and should be updated using official emergency-management statements.
