Brent crude touched $114.72 a barrel as concerns about Middle East escalation and possible energy supply disruptions pushed oil prices higher.

Dateline: London, United Kingdom

International oil prices rose on Friday, October 23, as concerns about escalating violence in the Middle East increased fears of potential disruption to energy supplies.

Brent crude futures touched $114.72 a barrel during trading, their highest level since early May, before trading at a lower level. US West Texas Intermediate crude also rose, according to market reports.

The rise followed reports of Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and heightened concern about the security of energy infrastructure and oil shipments in the region. Reuters also reported that Saudi Aramco had ordered the evacuation of its headquarters in Dhahran amid the escalation.

Oil prices respond not only to actual supply losses but also to expectations about future production, shipping routes, insurance costs and geopolitical risk. Even when oil continues to flow, concerns about possible disruption can push prices higher.

Higher crude prices matter to countries that import large quantities of energy. For India, sustained increases could put pressure on the import bill, affect the cost of transport and production, and complicate efforts to manage inflation. The eventual effect on retail fuel prices depends on domestic pricing decisions, taxes, exchange rates and other factors.

Investors and energy companies will be watching developments in the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas, as well as official statements from producing countries and shipping operators.

A temporary price spike does not guarantee that prices will continue rising. Oil markets can move quickly in response to diplomatic developments, production decisions and changes in demand.

The prices quoted here are trading levels reported on October 23, 2026, not a guaranteed closing price or a forecast for future prices.
