Three people were killed in a suspected militant attack in Manipur, triggering protests outside the chief minister’s residence in Imphal.

IMPHAL: Three people were killed and three others injured in a suspected militant attack near the boundary between Manipur’s Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts on Monday, October 19. The incident triggered protests in the state capital, where residents brought victims’ bodies to the residence of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to demand action against those responsible.

According to reports from Indian media outlets, the victims were among a group of people who had gone to collect firewood in a forested area when armed men allegedly opened fire. Authorities were investigating the incident, and responsibility for the attack had not been independently established.

Protesters Gather Outside Chief Minister’s Residence

Angry residents brought the bodies of victims to the chief minister’s official residence in Imphal, seeking accountability and stronger security measures. Police deployed at the site used tear gas shells to disperse demonstrators as tensions increased.

The bodies were subsequently taken to a hospital. The protest reflected growing public anger over continuing violence and concerns about the safety of people living in affected areas.

Markets and shops in parts of Imphal reportedly shut following the killings, while security was tightened around sensitive locations.

Ethnic Tensions Remain a Concern

The latest attack has renewed fears of further violence amid the prolonged tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The state has experienced repeated episodes of ethnic violence since May 2023, resulting in deaths, displacement and damage to homes and other property.

Investigators will need to establish who carried out the latest attack and whether it is connected to earlier incidents. Allegations about the perpetrators should not be treated as confirmed until supported by official findings or other reliable evidence.

Security Measures and Investigation

Authorities face pressure to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents. The immediate priorities include investigating the killings, locating any missing people reported in connection with the incident and ensuring medical assistance for the injured.

The incident underscores the continuing challenges facing Manipur’s security and peacebuilding efforts. Further verified information from police and state authorities will be important in determining the circumstances of the attack.
