At least 19 people died and 25 were injured in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, West Bengal, according to reports published on October 18, 2026. The incident occurred during the Durga Puja celebrations on Saturday evening, prompting an investigation into crowd management and safety arrangements.

Reports said heavy rain, overcrowding and a panic-inducing announcement may have contributed to the incident. Authorities are investigating the sequence of events and whether adequate arrangements were in place to manage the large gathering.

The West Bengal government announced an investigation, while Kolkata Police questioned people associated with the event. According to The Indian Express, seven people, including members of the puja committee and personnel involved in crowd management and security, had been arrested by October 18.

The investigation is expected to examine access routes, crowd-control measures, emergency exits and the response to the sudden surge of people. The precise sequence of events and individual responsibility remain matters for investigators to establish.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about public safety at large religious gatherings. Organisers of festivals and public events are generally expected to coordinate with authorities, manage entry and exit routes, provide emergency access and prevent dangerous overcrowding.

Authorities and emergency teams responded to the incident, while injured people received medical treatment. The investigation will determine whether safety lapses or other factors contributed to the deaths.
