India's mobile data traffic may grow 17% annually through 2030, outpacing forecast telecom revenue growth, according to a KPMG report.

India's mobile network traffic is projected to grow by approximately 17% annually between 2025 and 2030, while telecom operators' revenues are forecast to rise by just 2.7% a year, according to a KPMG report reported by Telangana Today on October 9.

The forecast highlights a challenge for the telecommunications industry: data consumption is increasing much faster than the revenue operators are expected to generate. Growing use of video, cloud services, connected devices and artificial intelligence applications is likely to add to demand for network capacity.

The report also projects that India's telecom equipment market could expand from $25 billion in financial year 2025 to $50 billion by financial year 2032. Domestic handset production reached ₹6,270 billion in FY2026, while telecom equipment import substitution was estimated at about 60%, according to the report.

The growth outlook creates opportunities for manufacturers, network-equipment suppliers, data-centre operators and companies developing software and digital infrastructure. However, operators must continue investing in network capacity, including 5G, while balancing capital costs and customer affordability.

The gap between traffic and revenue growth does not automatically mean operators will become less profitable. Outcomes will depend on pricing, operating efficiency, enterprise services, investment requirements and the mix of customers using their networks.

KPMG's report also points to the importance of building greater domestic capability in areas such as semiconductors, software and telecom technologies. Developing these capabilities could help India capture more value from its expanding digital economy rather than relying mainly on network deployment and equipment imports.
