The Home Ministry extended the deployment of 273 CAPF companies in Delhi until October 31 amid concerns about possible sudden protests.

The Union Home Ministry has extended the deployment of 273 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Delhi until October 31, citing concerns about possible sudden demonstrations by political and other groups.

The decision was approved following a request from Delhi Police, according to reports citing official sources. The ministry directed Delhi Police and the relevant central forces to coordinate their deployment.

The forces were initially brought to the capital earlier in October amid demonstrations organised by the Cockroach Janta Party and protests demanding accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

The latest extension is the second such extension reported this month. Officials said the additional deployment was considered necessary because of the possibility of demonstrations at sensitive locations across the capital.

The reported deployment comprises:

  • 125 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force, including 20 women personnel units

  • 46 companies of the Border Security Force

  • 39 companies of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police

  • 31 companies of the Sashastra Seema Bal

  • 20 companies of the Rapid Action Force

  • 12 companies of the Central Industrial Security Force

These figures describe the reported composition of the deployment, not the number of personnel physically present at every protest site. A company has a sanctioned strength of 100 personnel, although its effective operational strength may be lower.

The deployment reflects authorities' preparations for possible demonstrations; it does not establish that every location will experience protests or that a specific future demonstration is confirmed.

Delhi has seen demonstrations over electoral-roll revisions and demands for the Election Commission leadership to be held accountable. Protesters say the revision process raises concerns about eligible voters being excluded, while the Election Commission maintains that the process is intended to keep electoral rolls accurate.

Authorities face the task of maintaining public order while ensuring that peaceful demonstrations can take place in accordance with applicable laws and permissions. The coming days will show whether further protests occur and whether the additional security deployment remains necessary.

Why it matters: The decision affects security arrangements in the national capital and reflects continuing tensions around demonstrations over electoral-roll revisions.
