    Peru breaks diplomatic relations with Mexico over asylum claim of former prime minister

    Peru has severed diplomatic ties with Mexico after the latter granted asylum to former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who faces rebellion charges. Peru's government labelled Mexico's action an "unfriendly act" and accused it of "repeated" interference in its internal affairs. This escalation follows the 2022 ousting of ex-President Pedro Castillo, whom Mexico has supported, calling his removal a "coup."
